DRDO & IAF Successfully Test RudraM-II Air-to-Surface Missile [Defence & Technology] India achieved a major milestone in its indigenous defence programme as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted flight tests of the RudraM-II air-to-surface missile. The missile was launched from a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha, on 2 June 2026. RudraM-II is an advanced solid-propellant, air-launched missile developed primarily for Suppression and Destruction of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD/DEAD) missions. It is capable of engaging radar stations, command-and-control centres, and air defence systems at a strike range of up to 350 km. The missile was developed by DRDO's Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, with support from HAL and several other DRDO labs. The test was conducted under extreme release conditions and followed a critical flight trajectory, validating all subsystems including propulsion, guidance, and control algorithms. Telemetry data confirmed the missile struck a predefined target with high accuracy. Bangladesh's Khalilur Rahman Elected President of 81st UN General Assembly [International Affairs] In a significant diplomatic development, Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman was elected President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 2 June 2026. The election was held at the UN Headquarters in New York, where Dr. Rahman secured 99 votes out of 190 ballots cast, defeating Cyprus's candidate Ambassador Andreas S. Kakouris who received 91 votes. This is Bangladesh's second time holding the prestigious position. The first was in 1986–87, when Humayun Rashid Choudhury served as President of the 41st UNGA session. Dr. Khalilur Rahman is a veteran diplomat who served 25 years in the UN Secretariat in roles related to trade and development. RBI Annual Report 2025–26: Balance Sheet Expands 20.6% to β‚Ή91.97 Lakh Crore [Economy & Banking] The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released its Annual Report for 2025–26, revealing a significant expansion in its balance sheet. The RBI's balance sheet grew by 20.6%, rising from β‚Ή76.25 lakh crore to β‚Ή91.97 lakh crore as of 31 March 2026. Domestic investments of the RBI surged by 44.9%, reaching β‚Ή22.59 lakh crore. Gold holdings saw a remarkable increase of 63.8%, rising to β‚Ή10.94 lakh crore. The report also flagged a concerning 46% rise in fraud amounts to β‚Ή48, 021 crore during the year. The Annual Report reflects the health of India's monetary system, foreign exchange reserves, and banking sector regulation. PM SVANidhi Scheme Completes 6 Years β€” Extended to March 2030 [Government Schemes & Social Welfare] The PM Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) scheme completed six years since its launch in June 2020. The scheme was introduced to provide affordable working capital loans to street vendors whose livelihoods were severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. In six years, the scheme has disbursed 1.12 crore loans worth β‚Ή17, 800 crore to approximately 75 lakh street vendors across India. The scheme offers collateral-free loans in three progressive tranches: β‚Ή10, 000 (initial), β‚Ή25, 000 (second), and β‚Ή50, 000 (third tranche). The Government has extended PM SVANidhi until March 2030. New Lizard Species 'Mesalina bishnoi' Discovered in Rajasthan [Environment & Biodiversity] Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have identified a new lizard species named Mesalina bishnoi near Gajner in Bikaner district of Rajasthan. This marks the first confirmed record of the genus Mesalina in India. The species is named after the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan, renowned for their centuries-old tradition of protecting wildlife and nature. The Bishnoi community is famous for the 1730 Khejarli massacre, where 363 Bishnois sacrificed their lives to protect Khejri trees. The lizard has a snout-vent length of approximately 39.2 mm and belongs to the family Lacertidae. The resolution recognised the bicycle as a unique, sustainable, affordable, and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The day aims to promote cycling as a means of sustainable transportation, healthy lifestyle, and environmental conservation. In India, the government is encouraging cycling infrastructure in smart cities as part of its climate commitments and National Urban Transport Policy.
